Hi guys! For this week I interviewed Dominique Gomez. She’s a freshman here at Cal State Long Beach and she’s currently a biology major. With this degree, Dominique wants to be a  veterinarian. She loves wildlife animals and is excited to be able to help them in the future. Right now, Dominique commutes from Garden Grove. She lives with two younger siblings, one brother and one sister, along with her pet cat. She loves to play soccer, hike, adventure, and draw. She actually played soccer all four years in her high school. Her dream is to travel the world one day. While Dominique does not have a favorite movie, her favorite movie genre is action. About the Artist

Helen was a graduate student and was part of the Figure Track program at her school. She grew up in New York State and taught high school and middle school for 30 years. She began teaching high school in Boston for about 13 years, until she finally moved to California, sick of the snow and rain, and taught middle school for an additional 17 years. After this, she became the school librarian, falling in love with her job, and worked there for another 14 years. Currently, aside from her artwork, Helen loves to garden, and read fiction and mystery books. Helen also tends to carry a schedule book around with her to which she writes down all of her artistic ideas and what she wishes to express.

Formal Analysis

Helen’s exhibition circles mainly around the images of carousals and the animals associated with Merry-go-rounds. Her animals are portrayed in numerous different types of forms and styles. Some creations are wooden, some are vividly colored, others are black and white, and some are even three-dimensional. The expressions of most of her creatures are frantic and wide eyed. Most of her creations have a specific eccentric style to each different art piece. For instance one would have a theme of deep blue, or another a russet orange. All in all, her art pieces each have an individual style, while all having the theme of carousal animals.

Content Analysis

Helen says that her artwork is meant to demonstrate the chaos in society in general. She tends to portray only adults on the animals, or rather all the animals themselves completely breaking free from their holds while running around in a frantic herd. She believes that the animals moving in a circle represents the continuous mistakes that people make, in an endless insanity of repetition. The look of chaos on their face is meant to symbolize that adults are unsure of whats going on, simply running because they have nothing better to do.

Synthesis / My Experience

I admire Helen’s work because of the great level of variety it has. Unlike most artists that just make to create, Helen has a deeper meaning behind her works because she is able to connect her images to form a symbolic representation of society. She has a solid theme, yet can still offer different styles that allow the viewer to gain a broader perspective. I for one loved Merry-go-rounds as a kid mainly because of the beauty in it, and still appreciate it now. Helen however, allowed me to see a more deep emotional attachment to it in contrast, I can now understand that it can have a sort of frustrated sadness to it, and that the mistakes of our past are free to repeat themselves so long as we don’t break free of the cycle. Sometimes in life you really just need to leave the past behind so that you can move on in a new direction.

Hi everyone! This week we had to post four Instagram pictures and tag our class art110 in the process. For my pictures, I took a couple of shots of the artwork we saw in the gallery, one with my friends Symone and Tareena, and lastly one of my dog, Mika. Looking upon my classmate’s posts, I see few similarities with mine. People so far had mainly posted food, police cars, shoes, and a few others posted pictures with their friends like mine. I feel as though we are disconnected individuals, because even though I have met some of these people, I have not talked to them enough to get to know them. I believe that most classes in college are not taken seriously, and are mainly only taken for the credit towards their degree. If this was a class that people had joined outside of school, or a club for instance, people may feel much more willing to be involved and become close to one another. For these reasons I believe that we are individuals, while all searching for a similar goal, have many different dreams and personalities.

Hey guys! This week I interviewed our classmate Valerie Laslo for our classmate conversations. Valerie is a pre-criminal justice major and a third year here at Cal State Long Beach. Previously she had wanted to be a Marine Biology major, but changed her mind this last semester. A while ago Valerie went snow boarding in Montana and completely fell in love with the place. She got to see bald eagles and beautiful lakes, and while she grew up in Long Beach, is planning to move to Montana when she graduates or transfers. Valerie loves to go hiking and play sports. She has no siblings, but have two cats, one named Star and the other Cheetah. Recently she saw the movie DeadPool and loved it! (Me too I must say) If you want to learn more about Valerie, check out her website here! Valerie Laslo Thank you!

About the Artist

IMG_4781Sean Joy is an undergraduate here at Cal State Long Beach University. She has dormed here for two years and previously grew up in Los Angeles. This is her fifth year now at our school and she is working in the metals program in the three-dimensional department. She spends most of her time hanging out and gaming with her boyfriend, and finds the concept of the paper bottle sketch to be incredibly interesting.

Formal Analysis

While Sean’s works tend to have various different forms and shapes, her art pieces generally tends to be molded with numerous types of metals. Most of her work demonstrates smooth textures, soft images, and tiny technical details. Her work typically displays neutral colors, wavy or circular patterns, and a shiny composition that allows for an optimistic standpoint. IMG_4789

Content Analysis

Sean’s form of inspiration is manly to focus on the now. What I mean by that is that she does not feel as though one should wait around attempting to create a masterpiece, but instead just go ahead and start working to see what they become. Since her pieces vary from childhood themed stuffed bears to male genitalia, it is clear that her style represents a larger scale of works rather than being head set or close minded in one direction. She had told me that her favorite art piece was a hand brace, which her form of inspiration was from the movie Forrest Gump. While it appears there is not a specific meaning to most of her work, Sean attempts to allow the viewers to consume the overall message, that art is what you make it to be. Stop trying to make something for other people, instead make it for yourself and allow others to admire that

Synthesis / My Experience

My favorite part of the exhibition was the art piece with a bear on a spoon ladle. I felt as though the bear represented childhood and the long wavy slope down to the bottom of the spoon represented responsibility and adulthood because it is the portion where you must feed and take care of the child that is growing. While it seemed as though the bear had a long way to go, it still had a positive viewpoint in the shape that it was displayed. Looking at this piece forced me to realize that although I want to be responsible and independent myself, it is going to be a long time before I will be able to financially and mentally support myself. We spend most of our childhoods wishing to have freedom and to be able to explore, not having to have the overbearing parents make our every decision for us, but just like that spoon ladle, our lives have already been formed by them. We are already on the path. We are in college, seeking to earn credit and be noticed for our future jobs. Then we will be stuck with those jobs until we will have enough money to be able to retire, and then at that point there is little drive to explore or utilize the freedom we had longed to gain. IMG_4793

Creepsteevo Swankavitch

Sup my peeps. Creepsteevo here, on MoonBase Alpha, and I’ma tell a bit about myself. Obviously, you’ve all heard of me. However, if you are a complete loser and live under a rock I will inform you on myself anyways. My full name is Creepsteevo Daffodil Swankavich. The ladies love my middle name, it shows my touch of femininity. And, I am alllllllll about the ladies. I spend most of my time in a bar to pick up chicks. Although, with my reputation, the ladies might as well be picking up me. I’ve had so many girlfriends, including your sister, your cousin, your mom, and even the girlfriend you have now. That’s right, sorry not sorry. I can’t help it if I’m that smooth. Anyhow, my best friend is a total dog, just like me. Except he’s literally, a real dog. He’s my bartender. He makes all these great jokes all the time about how he’s only my friend because I keep buying his drinks, but that’s how we play around. His name’s Charlay, you should check out his website https://huntermervosh.wordpress.com/2016/03/19/charlay/. We’ve never actually hung out outside of the bar, but that’s because I never leave. Unless that prick Fawkes tosses me out. Fawkes is another bartender in the place. He is not a fan about me saying that I was with his girlfriend Mary. She’s a biter that one. The dude loves to brag about how her bite gave him superpowers but she didn’t give me anything except maybe a neck injury from how fast I turned checking her out. His website is https://dcarusblog.wordpress.com. While I go to the bar all the time, I don’t drink myself. I’m very against alcohol. Instead I get drinks for my ladies, they’re always thirsty. Usually I walk them home. Sometimes they don’t notice all the way until they reach their house! Then they get all excited and call their friends to say how blessed they are that they actually got Creepsteevo to walk them home. Coincidentally, the police tend to show up a few minutes later, that’s when they usually give me the whole “You can’t keep chasing these girls Creepsteevo, you gotta leave some for the rest of us” and while I may have added that last part, we all know they’re thinking it. One of my hot babes is named Aquamarine. She’s like a sexy sea goddess. The best girls are always underwater. She’s always saying “Oh no Creepsteevo, we would never work out! I wish we could but I think your hotness is causing the water to quickly deplete on our planet!” I mean at least she’s always talking something about that, I’m pretty sure thats where she’s getting at. Her website is https://biancadominguez.wordpress.com/2016/03/17/julliana/.  Another water babe is named Keva Murphy. She’s super smoking. Just like the torch weapon thingy she used to chase me away with. She’s just playing “hard to get”. Everyone always plays that game with me. She said something about how she’s too busy protecting the land for a boyfriend. I bet she’s just trying hard to protect her purity, because with me, Creepsteevo, that never lasts long. Her website is https://crystarts.wordpress.com/2016/03/15/character-name/.  Another underwater girlfriend I have is Oceana https://symonenicole.wordpress.com/2016/03/18/oceana/  , that babe wants me bad. She’s a mermaid-SCORE! Damn those fins are sexy. Point is, many people wish they could be Creepsteevo, but the truth is, I’m just super amazing and it’s too much to handle for the average Joe. In my spare time, I work out hard core at the ping pong table where I have become a master. Only one guy named Forrest has ever beaten me. But ultimately I win because his name is like trees and mine is like awesome. I also do a lot of running. I’ve become very good at it because my girlfriend’s have their wanna be “boyfriends” chase me saying “Creepsteevo! Stay away from my girl! She can’t handle your muscular body and righteous face! She’s going to leave me for you if you stay” and I only leave because I feel sorry for them because it’s true. Finally I’m only going to share one more thing, because Creepsteevo must remain mysterious to the ladies. I have written, not one, but TWO children’s books. That’s right. Two. As if I wasn’t hot enough already. Both of them feature me, Creepsteevo, and how to hit on the ladies. You must teach them young. Sure, neither of them are legally allowed to be sold in any book store or given out to people, but I have made a profit. My mom bought a copy, and since I wrote my books with crayons, I earned a whole 2 dollars and 25 cents. Also I won the lottery once, so I don’t have to work anywhere else. That is the life of me, Creepsteevo. Don’t panic or faint all at once ladies, I’m not afraid to have more than one girlfriend. 😉

Wk 8-Automatic Drawing

IMG_4753IMG_4758IMG_4747IMG_4757

For this week we were assigned to automatic drawing. What automatic drawing is, is that you take a partner, sit crisscross from each other, touch knees, then place a board on your legs. With all four of your hands you close your eyes and draw on a piece of paper that has been taped on your board. While the instructions claimed the pencil was going to move on its own, it didn’t, (fortunately this isn’t an Ouija board)and eventually we decided to take matters into our own hands (literally). Apparently we tended to make many stars unintentionally, the heart however, was on purpose. The instructions did not say that we had to be silent so we talked to each other in the process. My friend Judy was awesome for taking the pictures and my friend Matthew was great for doing the project with me. Somehow we made a pretty weird looking face on the side, but other than that the rest of our project mainly looks like a bunch of scribbles. There also happens to be a more cute winking face in the upper right portion of the scribbles. Overall I did not know what to expect from this project nor understand its purpose. According to the instructions we are supposed to gain some form of psychedelic experience from this project, but I felt more like a three year old learning to color with a crayon for the first time. While I follow instructions, I like to credit myself for being truthful, this was my experience and that was how I viewed this assignment. Thank you for reading!
